.Ben Vrackie looking very impressive this morning with its snow cover (& I nearly went for daffodils on the month's header photograph!). Mind you, I would suspect the mountain will be cloud-covered for some of the day
, while my daffodils don't look over-impressive at this stage anyway-- despite near-normal temperatures overall this month
(perhaps doesn't seem like it).

One of relatively few days with some snowfall this month, though none of it causing problems at low altitudes.
Almost time to do the calculations for March 2015 & compare with normal values. Full details should be available later on the 1st of April. The current outlook shows no early April heatwaves, but at least after some unsettled conditions in the next day or two, it should settle down somewhat

While all of us have changed our clocks & watches (or forgotten!), or had them change automatically, official Met Office Observing Sites still work on GMT: that was the case for me when I did observations for the M.O. at Grantown on Spey.
Now I'm my own man (so to speak), the weather has to fit in with the rest of life, but as a rule, daily observations are made round & about 9am CLOCK TIME

Not a particularly good weekend ahead, but as usual the links are there for more detail.
Normally 6 degrees is taken as the threshold of the growing temperature, so with 23 days so far this month
having exceeded this figure, there is plenty of evidence around of the start of spring.

The early birds will have seen some light snow falling,-- at least confirming my choice of header photograph for the month wasn't a bad one! Hard to believe that Pitlochry is capable of making the low 70's F in March. I have to admit that last Thursday when I was in Central London, it was miserably cold & nothing would tempt me for a brisk walk along the Embankment!  I suddenly developed a taste for choral music & art to keep me indoors!

SOLAR ECLIPSE----FRIDAY 20th MARCH (BEST AROUND 0930)--UPDATE SAT 21st

Down here in LONDON, it was cloudy & cold during the eclipse (which was only 85%anyway), with nothing to see. There was a bit of a power surge, as people who had been out staring at "nothing", came back indoors to have a tea or coffee& warm up.
One guy, however, sat at his laptop looking at Victoria's Webcam  Pitlochry, noting despite the sunshine, how dark it was with most cars having their headlights on around 0930.

Usual service later next week, with perhaps a temperature graph to see whether the eclipse caused a temporary fall in temperature.

.Yesterday was the wettest day so far this month, though with a continental high building over Scandinavia, it may well be have been the wettest for some days to come. It is by no means unusual for spells of high pressure & E winds during March & in such cicumstances, the west coast of Scotland is often sunnier & a little warmer than the east.

NW Scotland has taken a bit of a pounding of late & today follows in similar vein. The 0520 Shipping Forecast
(don't tell me you never listen to it!) was giving force 11/12 winds for sea areas Rockall & Bailey--enough to  frighten even the captain of the new cruise liner "Britannia"--if he were going that way!!
Mind you, Pitlochry ended up with its wettest day & coldest night this month so far   & this morning's E wind cuts right through you, with an even wetter day promised.

Today's rain has started a bit "sleety", so that goes down in " the book" as a day with snow falling.
I notice that the BBC charts have started showing gust speeds & a nasty-looking depresssion is expected to
cause these to be applicable widely over Scotland later on today & tonight, so worth bearing in mind re. vulnerable things around your property.
The rest of the week looks very changeable, but definite signs of a build of high pressure by the weekend & into next week.

.As I indicated yesterday, conditions were just right for heavy, prolonged rainfall in NW Scotland & indeed the area is left with 40 flood warnings this morning.
It is noteworthy how the fronts that deliver such huge amounts of rain weaken as they eventually move E & S.
Pitlochry rainfall in the past 24 hours has only amounted to 1.4mm. Compare that with the amount measured in the 24 hrs up to 1800hrs last evening at Cluanie Inn, Glenmoriston, in excess of 120mms.
Pitlochry also had its mildest day since last October!

A WARM WELCOME TO PITLOCHRY WEATHER!

The chart above shows a very interesting weather situation for parts of Scotland. It places much of the Western Highlands in a mild moist "warm sector" with winds from the SW. This can potentially result in some places, mostly mountainous areas, receiving huge totals of rainfall, possibly approaching 300mms in 48hrs. ( This is equivalent to the entire total of at least 3 average March falls in Pitlochry).
Yet, places as near to all this mind- boggling rainfall as Inverness, Nairn, Elgin or Aberdeen may end up with little or no rain at all & as a bonus could have maximum temperatures up to 16 degrees!!  Hard to believe, but that's Scottish weather for you.
I should mention that Pitlochry's geographical position makes it rather "less dramatic" in such situations!
We are likely to get some rain in the next 24hrs but not massive amounts & unfortunately NOT 16 degrees temperature-wise.
