The Tummel in spate (11am 28/10/14 ). Much of the heaviest & most persistent of the recent rain has been rather further west than the catchment area of our local river.

All credit to the skills & expertise of our forecasters, together with existing technology. The exceptional rain event was well-spotted & spotted early Estimated rainfall amounts were also very well predicted.
One wonders just what extra a £97m computer could have added to this situation, which the Met Men had well-in-hand, including the time rain would eventually cease.

Similarly, the professionals with existing technology were scarely off the mark over last winter's excess of rain.floods, storminess & mildness.

Perhaps the main blunders from the Met Office have been to release seasonal forecast data to the press when it was largely still experimental.  The tabloids were only too happy to select & exaggerate some of the failures for all it was worth, but why did professional meteorologists blab to the likes of the Sun in the first place??

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY
Overnight rain soon dying out, then remaining rather cloudy for a while. During the afternoon, a clearance to blue skies & sunshine is expected, this being the line of a very troublesome front which took up residence over the Western Highlands, giving massive totals of rain over 3 days (Pitlochry merely getting a taste of the worst of things.).
After dark, it should stay fine with largely clear skies & a ground frost is very likely.
MAX TEMP  12 (to start off with)       WIND  WNW 3/4         OVERNIGHT MIN TEMP   1 to 3  with a ground frost.

WEDNESDAY
Dry, with broken cloud & some sunshine. Cooler than of late.

£97million for more accurate forecasts!!-----A personal opinion by an enthusiast. Will the day ever arrive when we might be told that Pitlochry can expect a severe thunderstorm between 2.52 & 3.47, giving 54mm of rain, during which time only 2mm will fall on Aberfeldy & 6mm on Dunkeld---all this information given several hours in advance & successfully communicated to the entire population of the area, together with accurate implications on which places will be flooded as a result.
Well, unless this new super computer can do most of this, why not channel the money into the NHS,which could use the money right now!!

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY
Yet another day when very high rainfall totals are expected over Stirlingshire & Western Perthshire, particularly over the higher ground.  Conversely, parts of the East Coast may escape with a largely dry day.
Such days are not the easiest to do "spot forecasting" for an in-between location such as Pitlochry, but as an approximate guide I would think that amounts of rain here might be little more than 5% of that falling in such areas as The Trossachs & Crianlarich, so that a fall of 50mm there would likely give around 2 to 4 mms here. Such a formula, however, would be subject to great volatility!.
So, in summary, generally cloudy, occasional rain (mostly light).

TUESDAY
A windy day, with the culprit an ex-tropical storm  scooting through in the westerlies after battering parts of the Caribbean not many days ago. This is by no means unusual at this time of year, though in 1987, other factors combined, not readily identifiable at that time, to create an explosive storm & guarantee Mike Fish a place in the history books.Seemingly now, the acquisition of one of the most powerful computers on the planet, should ensure that the Met Office will be able to give advanced warning when such rare combinations of factors occur again.
Winds are likely to average force 5 or 6, with peak gusts predicted at around 47mph.
Much of the day should be dry, just the chance of the odd shower. Much colder than recently, with best temps only around 7 (as opposed to 17.2 on Saturday.)
