                                                         SUMMARY MAY 2013

AS  REGARDS  DAY TIME & NIGHT TIME TEMPERATURES, AS WELL AS RAINFALL TOTAL, MAY 2013 WAS REMARKABLY NEAR TO THE LONG-TERM AVERAGE. THE MEAN MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE AT 15.0, WAS JUST 0.2 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL, WHILE AT 5.4 DEGREES, THE MEAN MINIMUM TEMPERATURE WAS AGAIN 0.2 DEGREES ABOVE AVERAGE.
THE MONTH'S TOP TEMPERATURE WAS 22.5 ON THE 20th, WITH 3 OTHER DAYS REACHING OR EXCEEDING 20 DEGREES.
ON THE 25th, THE MONTH'S LOWEST MINIMUM OF -0.5 WAS RECORDED.  NO PREVIOUS RECORDS WERE BROKEN IN THESE RESPECTS.

THE MONTH'S RAINFALL TOTAL AT 66.2mms WAS 108% OF THE MAY NORMAL.. BY FAR THE WETTEST 24hr PERIOD WAS MAY 3rd WHEN 29.2mms FELL, 44% OF THE MONTH'S TOTAL.

2013 HAS HAD A PARTICULARLY COLD SPRING; MARCH HAD WELL BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURE VALUES & APRIL WAS ONLY A LITTLE BETTER. AN UNREMARKABLE MAY HAS, AT LEAST, SEEN THE SPRING PERIOD FINISH WITH A LATE BURST OF GROWTH, AS NATURE CATCHES UP.FROM A PAINFULLY SLOW START.

Thursday 23 May 2013

Best seen out of the window on a day like this, as a fresh covering of snow on the hills augments the splendour of the new foliage on the trees.

In a shower around 12 noon, blobs of wet melting snow could be seen falling, at least at this altitude (140ms) & after this shower, at 1215, the temperature was temporarily down to just 4.8 degrees---appalling for that hour at this stage in May.

A reminder that on 23rd May 2012, the temperature rose to 25.6 degrees!!!  Such is our weather!!

A busy scene at FORT WILLIAM station on 17th May. It's been a fine, dry day & crowds of passengers stream off the train, following a return trip to Mallaig .It's been steam-hauled & the engine can be seen arriving tender first, there being no turntable at Mallaig.
This steam enterprise is one of Britain's most successful & it pays to book in advance if you intend using the service which runs Mid-May to late October Mon to Friday (extra services operate in peak summer).

On the left, the overnight sleeper service from Euston, which arrived at 0955, idles its time in the other platform, awaiting its return journey to London at 1950.                        Meanwhile, once detached from its coaches, the steam engine returns to the nearby sheds, its work over for the day, shortly after 4 o'clock.

The temperature reached 21.2 yesterday, the warmest day so far this year & the highest since 8th September last year.   On the East Coast, temperatures only reached about 14 degrees.
TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY
It will be another warm day, with the best of the sunshine this morning. Temperatures should peak at 22 or 23. During the afternoon, the warm, humid, unstable air will encourage big cumulonimbus clouds to build up, with some places receiving heavy showers, with perhaps hail & thunder. At present, radar projections suggest the worst of these storms will pass to the east of Pitlochry, moving south. There is always the risk that we might be affected to a greater or lesser extent. Any showers that do affect us, will die out during the evening, giving a dry night.

OBAN, with it's unmistakeable McCAIG'S TOWER, built around 1897--1902 by the wealthy, philanthropic banker, John Stuart McCaig.
Oban has a resident population of just over 8,000 people, swelling to 25,000 in the height of the tourist season, making it the largest town between Helensburgh & Fort William on the West Coast..
The town receives around 65ins (1660mms) annual rainfall (nearly double that of Pitlochry), but on the plus side, fares very well in settled conditions with winds in an easterly quarter. It also has  fewer frosts than our area, with the record lowest temperature just -8, compared with -20 in Pitlochry..
