TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY
The weather continues in similar vein, so yet again, a day of sunshine & showers. Much of the time is likely to be dry, particularly to start with. However, there will be a tendency for spells with more cloudy skies to develop later on, bringing along a few showers from the west. It will feel pleasant in the sunny spells, with temperatures peaking at around 11, but out of the sun, exposed to the force 4 WNW breeze, it will still feel chilly. TONIGHT should be largely dry with clear skies at times, but a ground frost (at least) seems highly likely.

Like tonight, there may be another frost risk around dawn on Thursday morning, so gardeners be aware!

Sunday 28 April 2013

A generous slice of the action in Pitlochry on Saturday afternoon, was to be had at the railway station, where a returning leg of THE GREAT BRITAIN VI rail excursion arrived shortly after 3pm, a few minutes ahead of schedule.

The photograph, taken from the newly-painted footbridge, shows both engines' crews hard at work, involved either in raking coal forward in the tenders or ensuring hoses from a nearby tanker were delivering water to the locomotives as required. It was encouraging to see that some parents had brought youngsters along to see the scenes that were more the "norm" more than half a century before they were born!

June this year marks the 150 anniversary of the coming of the railway to Pitlochry & I believe there is another steam excursion passing through on the 15th of that month.

Many will now regard steam as slow, dirty & inefficient, but it is well to remember that the record-breaking speed achieved by the locomotive "Mallard" of 126mph in 1938 is currently the maximum speed permitted for high speed trains on the entire U.K. network (Eurostar excepted).

                                    AN AIR FROST RECORDED OVERNIGHT
TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY
A chilly start to the day, with frost on the grass earlier on. Essentially a day of sunshine & showers ahead. One or two of the showers may be heavy enough to contain hail or wet snow & a covering of snow is possible on Ben Vrackie & certainly on the Cairngorms. Between any showers, there are likely to be dry spells with some bright sunshine. Feeling rather cold in the showers & out of the sun, with best temperatures hardly into double figures. Winds moderate from W to NW. A chilly night ahead.

                             NOT ALL WEATHER

I see that MICHAEL FISH is "splashed"--literally, across the front of today's Telegraph.
Almost inevitably, the Oct. 1987 "hurricane" gets a mention.
People still don't seem to realize after more than a quarter of a century, that the BBC Weather Team are presenters  of the forecast while the Met Office Senior Forecasters are the ones ultimately responsible for the content.
Certainly, Oct 87 marked a sea-level change in British forecasting, with serious adverse conditions tending to be somewhat over-played, in preference to underestimating disruptive , damaging & life-threatening conditions.

STEAM TRAINS are not everyone's "cup of tea", but if YOU  get a buzz of nostalgia with the sight, sound & smell of what powered the railways back in the 30's/ 40's/50's & early 60's, then why not pop down to the station for 3.10pm this Saturday (27th) & if all is on time, get 15 minutes of sheer delight!

PUNCTUATION has probably suffered with the advent of E-mail & text: anything for speed.
What appears below is both amusing & informative, as you can see just how punctuation has the potential to completely alter the meaning of a sentence.

A woman, without her man, is nothing.

A woman: without her, man is nothing
