LOCAL AREA OUTLOOK

SUNDAY & MONDAY

During these 2 days, the east will see drier & sunnier weather than the west, Pitlochry taking an "intermediate position". Rather cloudy on Sunday, though any rainfall light & sporadic, though sunny intervals at a premium. Still breezy from the west.
Monday may be a degree or two warmer, though generally rather cloudy, with winds strongest at first & calming down later in the day.

Friday 30 August 2013

We found that in all the towns & villages we visited in Germany, the locals kept the place absolutely immaculate.Litter was conspicuous by its almost complete absence, as the above photograph shows. Credit must also go to the many tourists who visit from a variety of destinations. It would seem that the good habits
of the locals are adopted by the visitors, because it is expected & is the normal.

BUT---how often do we find a street in a British village or town which is as litter-free as this?

A brilliantly sunny start to the day (for a change), though by observation time, the sky was already 5/8ths cloudy. The header photograph shows inside my Stevenson Screen, with various thermometers & temperature sensors, the latter transmitting  information to display- units indoors.   Yesterday's weather proved something of a surprise, with more sunshine & higher temperatures than originally forecast. The passage of a cold front usually pulls the temperature down, but only very little on this occasion!  22.7 is the 2nd warmest day of August.
TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY
Weak fronts today & in days to come, pose a forecasting problem, particularly over cloud amounts. Today looks like being rather cloudy, especially this morning when there may even be a little sporadic rain. By this afternoon, there should be some lifting & perhaps breaking of cloud, but sunshine may well be rather limited. Winds will be variable, often only up to force 2 & temperatures will probably fail to exceed 17 or 18 at best.  TONIGHT--mainly cloudy, mild, with possibly a little occasional rain.

THURSDAY & FRIDAY---Generally rather cloudy, though dry for much of the time. Sunshine likely to be in shorter supply than over the last few days. Temperatures are likely to peak in the 17 to 18 range. Winds will be mainly from the SW & be fresher, up to force 4 on Friday. Fronts due to affect Scotland on Friday may be more active, though it's the west that will receive the lion's share of the rainfall.

A cold front is passing through the area today. This feature is giving a little rain on occasions, but it is weakening & the rain fragmenting as it does so. It will, however, make it more cloudy than yesterday, as well as cooler. Yesterday saw what is likely to be the warmest day this month (23.3)
TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY
Rather cloudy, with just the odd patch of light rain, especially in the first couple of hours. Later on, skies should brighten somewhat, with intervals of sunshine. Winds will be force 2 from W or NW & temperatures will approach 22 degrees, rather a surprise following the cold front  TONIGHT is likely to be rather cloudy, possibly with an odd patch of light rain, but remaining mild---very much a theme of the nights in the last couple of weeks.

WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY----Nothing very exciting.   In general terms, rather a lot of cloud, not very much in the way of sunshine, but equally only occasional, mainly light rain--not amounting to much. Temperatures will be near or slightly below normal, with winds becoming rather fresher than of late on Thursday.

Monday 26 August 2013

The floods in many parts of the Rhine/Danube appear to have been worse in June of this year than in the previous serious floods of 2002, as the photo comparison shows.

Had we have been booked on our cruise 6 to 8 weeks earlier, we would have been put in a hotel & given restricted coach excursions as an alternative.. No river traffic would have been possible, with little clearance between the swollen rivers & the bridges.

A zone of high pressure lies over Britain, but where as much of England & Wales should enjoy a dry, warm week, much of Scotland will be affected by occasional fronts moving from the NW. Yesterday, the west of Scotland saw the highest temperatures, Tyndrum topping 21.9 degrees.
TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY
Once again, the day is starting cloudy, but prospects are good for much of the day. Breaks in the cloud should appear during the morning, as cloud lifts & breaks. The afternoon should see some sunshine & it should feel warm, with temperatures around 20 to 22-- depending on sunshine amounts. .Winds will be light. Rather more unsettled towards the end of the week.

At Passau, just inside Germany, the Danube (looking remarkably blue), is joined by the River Inn, more milky in appearance. The rivers retain this colour difference for a short distance after their confluence.

The observant readers may just be able to see another tributary near the main confluence, this one being of a darker colour.

The Danube's source is in the Black Forest, the Inn's is Alpine, the town of Innsbruck owing its name to its location on the banks of this river.

Back in early June, Passau was seriously flooded after several days of heavy rain, but it was quite remarkable how quickly the German Authorities had restored things back to normality.

Some heavy rainfall totals expected today in East Coast areas of England, but it's cloud rather than rain the problem in our region.
TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY
A mostly cloudy day, with sunny intervals most likely p.m .Although dry for much of the time, the odd shower is just possible, with the risk higher the further east you are. Winds will be light, mostly from the W. & top temperatures are likely to reach around 18 degrees. CUMULONIMBUS CLOUDS often develop in hot, humid conditions.& are associated with thunderstorms.. The Austria/Hungary area was certainly due some thundery weather in early August of this year, as maximum temperatures rose in excess of 35 degrees.

The photograph shows a storm developing in the late afternoon period. The top of these clouds can reach over 30,000 ft & are best avoided by airliners, because of the dangers posed by severe turbulence or lightening strikes.

There are some cumulonimbus clouds around the local area this afternoon, which have developed in a warm, humid & unstable airmass. In such situations, some places will receive a heavy downpour, while others, not far away, may receive little or nothing. Spot forecasting in such situations, is well nigh impossible & sensible forecasters avoid naming precise spots that are in the bull's eye for a cloud burst.

A mild & humid start to the day, with misty low cloud already breaking from the SW (.the early improvement not appreciated by other forecast sources, but that's the advantage of actually being on the spot & seeing it!! )Rather less rain overnight than previously expected (4.6mms).
TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY
Early low cloud quickly giving way to broken cloud & some sunshine. Mild & humid already & becoming warm during the morning, as winds remain light & temperatures rise towards 20. By afternoon, there is likely to be some cumulonimbus cloud development, so some places could catch a heavy, thundery shower, while others miss them altogether. The shower risk remains into the evening, but the night should be mostly dry & mild.
