FEBRUARY SUMMARY

TEMPERATURES WERE A LITTLE COLDER THAN AVERAGE OVERALL ( The mean maximum by 0.5 & the mean minimum by 0.9). THERE WERE 18 NIGHTS OF AIR FROST, WHILE ONLY 1 NIGHT ESCAPED A GROUND FROST.

SLEET or SNOW FELL AT SOME TIME ON 8 DAYS & LAY ON THE GROUND ( at 140ms & at observation time) on 8 MORNINGS.. THE MAXIMUM SNOW DEPTH WAS 14cms. ALL THE SNOW WAS CONFINED TO THE FIRST HALF OF THE MONTH.

MUCH OF THE PRECIPITATION TOTAL RESULTED FROM SLEET OR SNOW, THE TOTAL FALL BEING 64.4mms (84% OF AVERAGE).  THE HIGHEST DAILY TOTAL OF 18.5mms OCCURRED ON THE 4th.

PERHAPS THE HIGHLIGHT OF FEBRUARY 2013 WAS THE DELIGHTFUL WEATHER DURING THE LAST WEEK OF THE MONTH, AS AN AREA OF HIGH PRESSURE DOMINATED THE SCENE.. THERE WAS NO RAIN OR SNOW, ABUNDANT SUNSHINE, LIGHT WINDS, FROSTY NIGHTS & INCREASINGLY MILD DAYS.  ON THE 27th, THERE WAS A LARGE DIURNAL RANGE OF 18.7 DEGREES, AS THE TEMPERATURE ROSE FROM AN OVERNIGHT MINIMUM OF -6.7 TO AN AFTERNOON MAXIMUM OF 12.0.

However, despite some decline in the high pressure, as well as some shift in its location further west, the weather over the next few days should still be fairly settled.  Some further sunshine today & still becoming mild by this afternoon (into double figures). An increase of cloud this evening & overnight, probably saving us from any significant frost. Light winds from NW.

LOCAL AREA OUTLOOK

FRIDAY---Remaining dry, with variable amounts of cloud & some sunshine. Light winds & best temperatures up to around 8 or 9 degrees.  Only a slight overnight  frost, if any.


SATURDAY & SUDAY--- Partly cloudy, but often bright with a little sunshine & staying dry. Maximum temperatures should be in a range 8 to 10, with only a touch of frost overnight, if any. Winds mainly force 2 or less.

In Tuesday's unbroken sunshine, SCHIEHALLION, in the distance,stands out above the local moorland.

High pressure does not always bring such glorious weather, but on this occasion, over much of Scotland, it's very much been a case of::---

The high pressure that is giving us this delightful spell of weather, will slip a little to the west of Britain from tomorrow, allowing weak fronts & more cloud to advance across us from the N.W.. However, the high will still remain close enough to ensure mainly dry conditions prevail for a number of days yet, though sunshine amounts will be more limited.

THURSDAY---Probably a bright start, but cloud is expected to spread from the N.W. during the day. Frost early on, but above average temperatures by afternoon. Only a slight frost likely overnight, with cloud acting as a blanket.


FRIDAY---Broken cloud with some brightness, as high pressure clings on. Temperatures should reach values near or a little above the early March normal.

An absolutely gorgeous day, virtually cloudless. Still a reminder of winter, however, on the higher ground.

From a minimum of -6.6 (the coldest night of 2013 to date), the thermometer has risen to 8.2 this afternoon, giving a large diurnal range of 14.8 degrees.

SATURDAY---Yet again, an east/west split on cloud, so some cloudy spells locally, though a reasonable prospect of some breaks & some sunshine too. An outside chance of a slight snow flurry.Still feeling cold.


SUNDAY---The best of the sunshine further west, with places near the East Coast remaining mostly cloudy. Staying cold, as it will throughout next week.

Plenty of clear skies & sunshine over parts of Scotland at present (though scarcely any milder than here, at around 2 degrees)

A large high pressure system over the North Sea is feeding cold continental air over Britain. The situation is unlikely to change much between now & the start of next week.

FRIDAY---Very similar to Thursday, so still feeling cold, though probably dry.


SATURDAY---Likewise, though possibly a slightly higher risk of a few snow flurries, amounting to very little.

A tranquil scene on a fine February day.(18th), as observed from the road between Moulin & the Golf Course.

 However, though still benign, today finds a layer of low cloud, which came in from off the North Sea linked to a weak cold front moving from east to west.
Temperatures have actually fallen during the last couple of hours & with a moderate SE wind & some drizzle in the air, there is a distinctly raw feel to things, accentuated by the disappointment of seeing a short taste of spring rudely stopped in its tracks

At this time last year, we were entering a mild, mainly dry spell to end February, including a record-breaking 15.1 degrees on the 23rd.   This was then followed by a dry & exceptionally mild March.
Things don't seem set to follow such a pattern this year!!.

The sunshine should last for the best part of the day, but later in the afternoon, it is expected to become more cloudy from the east, heralding several days of colder & cloudier conditions with fresher winds, as high pressure becomes established to the north & north east.
