Though intensely fascinating, this might be described as "Hell on Earth". Here you must keep to the paths, as the earth's crust is scarcely thicker than eggshell & your foot could go through into dangerously hot water.Unpleasant smells abound & visibility is often restricted. Not a place for a teacher to take a bunch of unruly kids; though on second thoughts, it might be JUST the place!!

Pressure remains low around Iceland & high over the Atlantic, W. of Iberia. This leaves Scotland in a changeable W.airflow, with occasional fronts bringing longer spells of rain or concentrations of showers.
SUNDAY is likely to be the best day of the bunch, seeing good sunny spells & above average temperatures (15), though as most days, rather breezy.

Recent volcanic activity near LAKE MYVATN. Geologically & ornithologically, the lake is probably the most interesting area in Iceland. The area receives generous amounts of dry, sunny & often quite warm weather & around 100,000 visitors a year come here. There are 2 kinds of midges which do not bite & black fly which do!  Unfortunately, there are also mosquitoes.

Gales,huge rainfall totals, floods, rail & road closures, massive cloud depths, streets covered in foam from sand & sea----the worst September storm for 30years. Pitlochry caught the gales, especially in the morning period, but was spared the excesses of rain & the month remains much drier than average in this part of the country.

GODAFOSS (The "Falls of the Gods")---31 miles E. of Akureyri, Iceland.

NEARER to HOME

Something for the "weather enthusiast" over the next few days, as an anticyclone over Britain retreats briskly with the advance of a depression of tropical origin. The forecast has been giving the professionals something of a headache, but now they are " going" for the depression to take a track Biscay, through the Channel & into the Southern North Sea. Around the system, both strong winds & heavy rain
feature, bringing a very unsettled finish to the month.
It looks as though Southern England will get the worst of things on Sunday, while Northern England & Scotland are in the firing line for Monday & probably much of Tuesday as well..
It seems likely at this stage that Southern & Eastern parts of Scotland will receive the heaviest falls of rain, 
while the far west has the least. As winds will blow from between E. & N.E. this will reinforce the unpleasant conditions in Eastern Scotland.
I doubt Pitlochry will be one of the wettest places during this period, but it's highly likely that the present very low total for September will have been at least doubled by Tuesday morning's observation.

LOCAL AREA OUTLOOK----SUNDAY to WEDNESDAY
Pressure is currently high over Britain, but this is, unfortunately, only temporary, as a deep depression moves from Biscay, up the Channel & into the North Sea by the start of next week. This system, incidentally, is a former tropical storm & will deliver quite a "punch" to many areas, but less so to Northern & Western Scotland.  So, briefly in summary:--
SUNDAY--Dry, some sunshine, though rather more cloud by the end of the day
MONDAY/TUESDAY--Windy from the E or NE,up to force 4 to 6. Cloudy with spells of rain (the worst of this in Southern & Eastern areas--possibly the North & West escaping the worst of the rain.
WEDNESDAY---Some improvement, with dry spells & sunny intervals.
It will be cool throughout (daytime range 10 to 13), but not as cold by night from Sunday night onwards. 

Our 3rd & final port of call in Iceland was at AKUREYRI, known as the "capital & jewel of the North"
It lies at the head of the longest & narrowest inlet in the region, only 60 miles inside the Arctic Circle.
It has daily flights to Reykjavik, 272 miles to the south west, taking 50 mins. The bus takes 6 hours!

All day yesterday, we were on the northern edge of a rain area. Perth had more rain, Edinburgh, a lot more & there was flooding in parts of Strathclyde & Ayrshire. Today is looking better, though it was a very nippy start. The day should stay dry (just an outside chance of a p.m. shower), with the best of the sunshine this morning & more cloud around this afternoon. Winds will be fairly light from the N.W. & temperatures should peak at around 12 or 13.   Tonight should become mainly clear & cold.

Relatively high pressure with light winds will dominate the weather from now until Sunday. Thereafter, we are in the hands of a vigorous depression located over the S. North Sea. Saturday & Sunday should be dry with some sunshine. Monday & Tuesday see winds backing into the E. or NE with more cloud around & some showery rain around.  Throughout the period, highest temperatures should range between 11 & 13, though nights should be less chilly than of late, owing to cloud & wind.

The morning is expected to remain cloudy, with perhaps a little further light rain, though staying wet for longer in the Central Belt & especially in Southern Scotland. Pressure begins high over SW England & low to the NE of Scotland. Pressure temporarily rises over much of Britain during Friday & Saturday but then a deep low approaches from the SW for Sunday.   Thursday may well begin rather cloudy, but later sunny spells develop & broken cloud with sunny spells is the theme for Friday & Saturday. Sunday should start dry, but cloud & rain are lined up for later.  Winds begin in the NW but end the period from the SE.  Daytime temperatures are likely to reach in a range 11 to 13, with chilly nights at first.

LOCAL AREA OUTLOOK----WEDNESDAY to SATURDAY
High pressure will be close to Southern England, while pressure remains lower over Scotland, which will be more vulnerable to fronts & depressions, particularly in the west.
Wednesday will start chilly, but much of the time will be dry with spells of sunshine. There may be a spell of rain late on Wednesday night & perhaps into Thursday morning, but much of the day should be dry.  Friday & Saturday should be dry with broken cloud & spells of sunshine. Most of the period will again see winds from a W. quarter, mostly around force 3 or 4.  Daytime temperatures will be a little below normal in the 11 to 13 range, while overnight temperatures will be well down in single figures, with perhaps some ground frost.

LOCAL AREA OUTLOOK---TUESDAY to FRIDAY
Pressure is low to the N. & N.E. of Britain, while high pressure attempts to nose- in from the S.W.  Scotland will remain in a mostly W. to N. W. airstream, with fronts affecting us from time to time.  The weather during this period will be decidedly autumnal, with winds mostly force 3 to 4, daytime temperatures peaking at 11 to 13 & with chilly nights (the odd ground frost is on the cards). There should be a fair amount of dry weather, with broken cloud & spells of sunshine, though showers are always a possibility. There is currently a question mark over Thursday, with a rain area passing a little way to the south of our area, though needs watching!

Pressure will stay low to the north & high to  the south & south west, with weak fronts crossing Scotland mainly in a NW airstream. Monday is set up to be quite a showery day, though with some cloud breaks & sunny intervals.Thereafter, little in the way of rain is expected, though, despite some sunshine, it will tend to feel autumnal with coolish daytime temperatures & a force 3 or 4 wind from the NW. Most nights will be rather chilly & a couple of ground frosts seem probable.
