April 2011 turned out to be an unusually warm month. It was also very dry.
The average maximum temperature at 15.7 degrees was a massive 4.4 degrees above the long-term average. It meant that no less than 20days of the month were actually warmer than the normal daytime temperature for MAY. Moreover, 9 days actually bettered the average daytime temperature for JUNE.
This April was warmer by day in Pitlochry than the long-term average April maximum temperature in places including LONDON & the ISLES of SCILLY. Even a normal April in PARIS would only be 0.3 degrees higher than we have experienced this past month. The warmth of Pitlochry's days in April 2011 has been what normally would occur about 7 degrees of latitude further south!
The average minimum temperature was above the long-term average, but not to the same degree, (1.9 above). The many clear nights allowed temperatures to fall quickly & there were 13 ground frosts & 5 air frosts, all of the latter being slight & in the final week.
Gardeners & growers might have reservations about the"glorious" April. Only 26.4mms of rain fell & this after a March defecit of 20%. The actual defecit in April was 46%. Only one "worth-while fall occurred (on the 4th), otherwise it was left to little more than occasional spits & spots or drizzle to water the plants & crops. However, we only have to go back to 2007 to find a drier April.
As far as records are concerned, the extremes of temperature observed this April (21.5 & -1.1) did not beat values observed in the recent past, but the unusually high mean maximum temperature of 15.7 has no challenger in the past 35 years & I suspect in a considerable period before that. I expect we will all look back on it for many years to come, perhaps as something of a counter-balance to December 2010!

The weather was mostly sunny, with quite a strong E to SE wind & very warm for late April. It was, in fact, warmer than an average day in JUNE. The maximum temperature was 19.2 degrees (Leuchars RAF, so close to the North Sea, was only 11.8 at 1600Hrs). There is currently a band of showers across the Edinburgh area.

Apart from a small chance of a shower this evening, there should be further intervals of sunshine & clear periods overnight. It will again be cold, though perhaps a little less so than last night, with ground frost in some places.

Another superb day, with very little cloud, though later in the afternoon, some medium height cloud began to encroach from the NW, fragmenting as it did so. Highest temperatures were better than predicted, reaching 17.2 degrees, close to a normal JUNE value. It was only 13 degrees at Dundee Airport at 1500Hrs.

Some sunshine this evening & clear spells overnight. Chilly yet again, with most places getting a ground frost, while the most prone spots may see an air frost too.

There were variable amounts of cumulus cloud & spells of sunshine. The maximum temperature reached a pleasant 15.9 degrees.

It's rather showery over the Grampians at present, the nearest downpours not too far to the NE of Pitlochry. It's just possible one could just clip us, more likely it will remain dry. Overnight will see some clear spells & this will lead to a ground frost in some places.
OUTLOOK
High pressure close by, will ensure that the weather remains dry for a few days. There should be some sunshine each day, with maximum temperatures up to around 13 to 15 degrees. Overnight, there will be clear spells & it will be chilly with some ground frost likely. East winds may introduce some low cloud from the North Sea, especially in the mornings later in the week.

Morning skies were covered by altostratus cloud, which made the sunshine weak & hazy, but once this moved away to the SE, skies cleared with plenty of sunshine. Temperatures rose to a very respectable 15.1. I climbed Ben Vrackie this afternoon, so hopefully some summit pictures to come in the next day or two.

Morning skies were covered by altostratus cloud, which made the sunshine weak & hazy, but once this moved away to the SE, skies cleared with plenty of sunshine. Temperatures rose to a very respectable 15.1. I climbed Ben Vrackie this afternoon, so hopefully some summit pictures to come in the next day or two.

The early low cloud cleared rapidly, then it was mainly sunny. It took a while for temperatures to climb, but they did so eventually, reaching 19.6 degrees (about 8 degrees above the April long-term average & similar to an average JULY day in Pitlochry). With sea fog in the Tay estuary for a while & breezes off the cool North Sea. Dundee Airport spent much of the afternoon on just 11 degrees.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
A sunny evening & dry for a time overnight, but later a band of rain is expected to move into the area from the west. Rainfall amounts may be more significant than for some time, so gardeners could well be pleased by this forecast. Mild overnight.

There was a moderate SE breeze & places nearer to the E.coast did not fare so well on temperature. At 1530Hrs, DUNDEE (Riverside Airport) was only 10 degrees. There was also a shower showing up on the radar between Pitlochry & Blairgowrie.

Clear spells this evening & overnight, as well as areas of cloud. Later, low cloud may encroach from the North Sea. The overnight low should be around 6 or 7 degrees.

Following the clearance of early morning low cloud, the rest of the day remained dry with broken cloud & spells of sunshine. Temperatures were again at levels associated with an average day in JUNE (17.9 degrees maximum)
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
A dry evening with broken cloud & some sunshine. There is a chance of a belt of rain affecting us later in the night. No frost, with lowest temperatures close to 7 degrees.
OUTLOOK
A few more days to come with low cloud to start the day, but the sun breaking through to give warm conditions thereafter.

TUESDAY 19th APRIL----EVENING
UPDATE @ 1800Hrs
Early low cloud dispersed as the morning went on & the sun broke through. There was rather more cloud around during the afternoon, with some showers about, mainly further north. Temperatures were again well above average, with a maximum of 17.3, close to an average day in June. (Let's hope we don't get a June with several days at April average values!!)
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Just the chance of an isolated shower, but otherwise dry, but with low cloud returning from the North Sea. Lowest temperature about 5 or 6 degrees.
OUTLOOK
Still looking promising for a few days yet. The mornings will tend to start with mist & low cloud, but the sun should break through later. Little or no rain is expected, while daytime temperatures continue to be above normal April values.

A dry, but partly cloudy day with some spells of sunshine during the afternoon. It was again much warmer than a normal April day, the maximum of 17.3 being close to the normal for a day in JUNE; we really are doing very well!

SUNDAY 17th APRIL---EVENING
UPDATE @ 1715hrs
Yesterday proved disappointing on sunshine & temperature, but today was quite the reverse. There was hardly a cloud in the sky & the temperature rocketed to 19.7 degrees. The NW wind was much lighter. A perfect day for our tourists & even the local gardeners who need rain, could get on with weeding, mowing the lawn & doing nature's work with the garden hose.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
A fine warm evening. Perhaps rather more cloud at times overnight. Prone areas could well get a ground frost during any late night or dawn clear spells.
OUTLOOK
MONDAY should again see some sunshine, though there may well be rather more cloud patches around. An isolated afternoon shower is just possible. It was rather more sunny this morning than expected & somewhat more cloudy this afternoon. However, it was again mild & rainless. The maximum temperature reached 15.7.

It is likely to be mostly dry throughout the period, with a mixture of clear spells & more cloudy periods. Lowest temperatures are likely to be around 5 degrees.
OUTLOOK
SATURDAY is expected to be dry, with variable amounts of cloud & some sunny spells. It will again be mild, with highest temperatures around 15 degrees. SUNDAY should be dry with sunny spells & temperatures up to 16 or 17 degrees.

The maximum temperature rose to 15.7 degrees, a full 5 degrees up on yesterday& about 4.4 above the April average. We are certainly doing well & tomorrow I will look at the facts & figures for the 1st half of the month.

THURSDAY 14th APRIL
HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
Milder than yesterday at this time & Wednesday did turn out the coldest day so far in April. Despite the "bits & pieces" of rain in recent days, I spent an hour & a half with the garden hose yesterday afternoon. The frontal systems crossing at present are very weak & giving very little rainfall east of the mountains. In any case, April is the driest month of the year on average & extra dry April/May periods can prove troublesome for plant growth. Milder than yesterday at this time & Wednesday did turn out the coldest day so far in April. Despite the "bits & pieces" of rain in recent days, I spent an hour & a half with the garden hose yesterday afternoon. The frontal systems crossing at present are very weak & giving very little rainfall east of the mountains. In any case, April is the driest month of the year on average & extra dry April/May periods can prove troublesome for plant growth. Tomorrow, I will report where April statistics stand at the half-way mark in the month.

WEDNESDAY 13th APRIL----EVENING

The day went much as expected; mainly cloudy, rather cold with tiny amounts of rain. The highest temperature was a touch below average & may well prove to be the coldest day of the week. There was a little brightness later in the day & this may push the thermometer up a fraction yet.

Much of the day was dry, with good spells of sunshine. Just occasionally, the cloud built up somewhat, producing a slight shower (1615/1630 was the time we came closest to a downpour). The maximum temperature was 12.7 degrees, the cool feel to the air being offset by the strong sunsnine.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Apart from the chance of an isolated shower, the evening should be dry with further sunshine. Overnight, it should be dry with clear spells, though cloud is likely to increase towards morning.Many places can expect a ground frost.

The afternoon was brighter, with some good sunny spells, but there was a sharp shower around 3p.m.(heavy enough to drive me indoors from the garden). The day's rainfall, however, only totalled 0.8mms. The maximum temperature was 13.9, 7.3 degrees cooler than yesterday, but actually still 2.6 up on the average.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Some sunshine this evening, with still just the chance of an isolated shower. Becoming dry overnight with clear spells & becoming quite chilly. There is likely to be a ground frost in many places.

What a superb day! It's been the warmest day so far this year, with a maximum temperature of 21.2 degrees.
THIS IS ALMOST 10 DEGREES ABOVE THE AVERAGE MAXIMUM FOR APRIL
IT'S BEEN THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE SINCE 3rd SEPTEMBER 2010.
DURING THE 92 DAYS OF SUMMER 2010(JUNE/JULY AUGUST), ONLY 13 DAYS WERE WARMER THAN TODAY (which says as much about last summer as it does about 10th April 2011!!)

Very few parts of the entire U.K. were cloudy this morning (Orkney & Shetland, The Yorkshire Coast &, of course, the Southern part of the Highlands!) However, the hoped- for sunshine did at last materialize & the afternoon became pleasant. Temperatures were a little down on Friday's, but still reached a well-above average 17.6.
