UPDATE @ 1630Hrs
It's been an essentially cloudy, dry day, with temperatures up on recent days. The maximum rose to 7.6 (one of the highest this month) & the current temperature was 6.8.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
There has been a fair amount of rain over Western Scotland that has, so far, failed to penetrate towards the east. During the evening, that situation is likely to change, with some rain at times for part of the evening & into the first part of the night. Later, things will dry up, with a few breaks in the cloud. It will remain breezy, with minimum temperatures around 2 or 3 degrees & perhaps a slight ground frost.

OUTLOOK
Tuesday will see broken cloud, some sunshine, but perhaps a shower. The remainder of the working week will be unsettled with rain or showers at times & fresh to strong winds. It should be mild on Wednesday, but then turning colder, with perhaps some snow in the showers.

MONDAY 31st JANUARY

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
 The last day of what has been a cold month. Look out for a detailed summary later, with the facts & figures + Nexus temperature graph for the whole month. Today starts cloudy & cold, with a minimum of 0.1 & a current temperature of 2.1.The weather charts look much " busier", with lots of isobars. Much of today's rain is in the west.


PILOCHRY TODAY
 The weather pattern is changing, as low pressure takes over from high pressure. The centres of low pressure will be mainly heading for Iceland. Today is likely to be mainly cloudy, with little in the way of sunshine. It will, however, be predominantly dry, with much of the rain remaining in the west. Any rain that reaches Pitlochry, is likely to be very light & patchy. Winds will be moderate, mainly from the SW & temperatures will rise to 5 or 6 degrees.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Remaining mainly cloudy. A spell of rain seems likely during the middle of the night, followed by some breaks in the cloud.Temperatures will fall to around 2 degrees at their lowest, with perhaps a touch of ground frost.

OUTLOOK
A generally unsettled period for the remainder of the working week. Tuesday will see sunny intervals & perhaps the odd shower. More general rain seems likely for a time on Wednesday, while Thurs. & Fri. promise to be windy with showers. Though temperatures should be close to normal at first, they may fall a little later, so that some wintry precipitation may occur in the showers, particularly on local hills.

SUNDAY 30th JANUARY----EVENING

UPDATE @ 1745Hrs
It's been a mainly cloudy & cold day, with a few snow grains at around 1000Hrs, as well as the odd spit of rain at other times. The maximum temperature only reached 2.8 & currently, the temperature stands at 1.9.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
A mainly rather cloudy night, dry for the most part, but light rain will be close by to the west & may just spill over to affect us. Amounts will be very small. There may be a few breaks, which will determine whether or not there is an air frost (minimum down to between -1 & +1)

OUTLOOK
Some rain during Monday afternoon, probably mainly light & occasional, but temperatures up a little.  Tuesday to Thursday should see sunny intervals, but also some showers & by Thursday, these could fall as snow as temperatures fall somewhat. It will be rather windy at times, mostly from a W to SW direction.

SUNDAY 30th JANUARY

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
Some slippy patches around this morning, as slight rain recently, has fallen on frozen ground. Only a slight air frost (-0.3 )

PITLOCHRY TODAY
 Mainly dry today, with a mixture of rather cloudy periods & some brighter spells with a little sunshine. Highest temperatures should reach around 4 degrees.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Mainly dry with partly cloudy skies, but a few breaks leading to enough clear patches to allow a very slight frost. Minimum temperatures around 0 to -1.

OUTLOOK
 Between Monday & Thursday, the weather will become more unsettled, as low pressure takes over & winds strenghthen from the W or SW. There will be a mixture of one or two rain belts & showery weather in between.  Most of the heavier rain is likely to fall to the west of Pitlochry. Although rather milder for a time, lower temperatures later may lead to some snow showers. There is, however, no current indications of any prolonged wintry conditions.

BEN NEVIS----(FROM THE TRAIN TO MALLAIG)

Next week (Mon to Fri, BBC2 @ 1830 ), Michael Portillo takes the West Highland line, in the series Great British Railway Journeys. While in Fort William, he will investigate the weather observatory which was operated on the summit of Ben Nevis between 1883 & 1904.               There is a book called "THE WEATHERMEN of BEN NEVIS" written by Marjory Roy & published by The Royal Meteorological Society (first published 2004)

SATURDAY 29th JANUARY----EVENING

UPDATE @ 1800Hr
A pleasant day, dry with some sunshine. However, it remained cold, with highest temperature 3.6 degrees. The current temperature was 2.1.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
A dry night, with some cloudy spells, but a few clear intervals, leading to a slight frost. Minimum temperatures down to about -2.

OUTLOOK
 Sunday is likely to be the last dry day for some time, as high pressure is replaced by low pressure, with fronts & depressions bringing less settled conditions, with periods of rain interspersed with sunny intervals & some showers. It will become windier than of late, but temperatures should be somewhat higher.

SATURDAY 29th JANUARY

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
A dry, bright morning, with well-broken cloud. It is yet again nippy, following an overnight minimum of -2.0. The garden is still very hard following another sharp frost on the ground.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
 No rain from the cold front that passed recently, so it should be a dry day, with variable amounts of cloud & a little sunshine. Temperatures will still be on the cold side, only reaching 2 or 3 degrees.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
 Dry throughout, with variable amounts of cloud & a few clear spells. A widespread slight frost, with minimum temperatures in the range -2 to -4.

OUTLOOK
Sunday probably the last dry, settled day for the time being. Next week, we will be more under the influence of low pressure, with stronger winds, mostly from W or SW & bands of rain alternating with drier brighter spells with a few showers. Temperatures should be higher than of late.

ALTOCUMULUS-----PILE D' ASSIETTES (pile of plates)

After today's uninspiring stratocumulus cloud cover, try this for something more spectacular. Taken over Speyside a few years ago, this is a brilliant example of the PILE of PLATES cloud.  Altocumulus clouds provide some of the most interesting cloud varieties in our skies, from lenticular to flying saucers to doughnuts & other haunting U.F.O. formations.

FRIDAY 28th JANUARY----EVENING

UPDATE @ 1700Hrs
We've had a colder than expected day, with the temperature only managing to reach 1.4. The stratocumulus cloud, though thin. has been persistent & prevented any sunshine. The current temperature was 1.2 degrees.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Limited breaks this evening may result in a slight frost. Cloud is likely to increase later in the night as a cold front passes through. This may just give a little light rain. Minimum temperature -1 or-2.

OUTLOOK
Some cloud & perhaps a little rain to start with, but becoming brighter later. Though starting mainly dry, next week will gradually become more changeable,with some rain or showers at times, though somewhat milder.

FRIDAY 28th JANUARY

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
Not as cold overnight as expected (cloud acting as a blanket ), but a frost nonetheless(-6 on the grass , which is rock hard.) Air min, was -2.2 & a cluster of Scottish stations were down to -4 or -5.  A 7/8ths cloud cover this morning (stratocumulus @ about 3000 ft.)

PILOCHRY TODAY
Another dry day ahead, but it is likely to be more cloudy than yesterday, though, hopefully, there should be a few brighter interludes with a little sunshine.Still feeling cold, with best temperatures around 4 degrees.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
A few clear intervals in the first half of the period, is likely to lead to a slight frost. Later on, there is likely to be an increase of cloud, followed by a little rain, associated with the passage of a cold front from the N.W. Minimum temperature around -1 or-2.
OUTLOOK
A little rain possible at first on Saturday, but improving later. Dry with some brightness on Sunday & Monday Staying on the cold side.

THURSDAY 27th JANUARY----EVENING

UPDATE @ 1700Hrs
It's been a very pleasant day, with plenty of sunshine. However, temperatures were again on the low side, only reaching 4.0. (Aviemore only rose to 1 degree ). Already @ 1700, the thermometer is showing -0.1.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
A few patches of cloud, but also clear spells.There will be a widespread moderate frost,with lowest temperatures down to around -4 or -5.

OUTLOOK
Apart from a weak cold front passing through on Saturday morning, high pressure is set to dominate the next few days. Mainly dry weather is expected (perhaps a cloudy period on Saturday, with a little rain ). There should be some bright weather with sunny intervals, rather cold by day & some mist & frost overnight.

THURSDAY 27th JANUARY

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
Virtually clear skies over us this morning, though quite showery over Fife. There has been a frost, down to -6.5 on the ground, making the lawn very "crunchy"  Current air temperature -1.8.  A good rise in pressure, so high values back again.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
It should be a fine, dry day with sunny spells & some variable amounts of cloud. Maximum temperatures should reach around 4 degrees, with light winds.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
 The dry weather will continue with long clear spells. There will be a widespread moderate frost & some mist & fog bands in the valley.Minimum temperatures are likely to be down to -5 or -6, so the inevitable icy patches.

OUTLOOK
Still a good deal of dry, settled weather to come in the next few days, with only the odd spell of slight & occasional rain. Other than that, a good deal of dry, bright weather with some recovery in temperature values.

WEDNESDAY 26th JANUARY----EVENING

UPDATE @ 1630Hrs
Much of today was dry, just a couple of light showers. There were a few cloudy periods, but also some lengthy bright spells, with only patchy cloud. It was, however, colder than on recent days, with the day's highest temperature only 5.6. The current value was 3.4.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
It should be a dry evening & night with broken cloud & some clear spells. There is a much greater chance of frost tonight, minimum temperature around -2/-3 degrees, with some icy roads & pavements tomorrow morning.

OUTLOOK
A mainly dry,quiet few days ahead, with broken cloud & some spells of sunshine. It will be rather cold by day, with frost & some mist patches forming overnight. Winds will be light, as high pressure re-establishes.

BEN VRACKIE PEEPS THROUGH THE CLOUDS ON A FINE WINTER'S DAY.

Normally, the summit is about 5 degrees colder than the town; however there are exceptions. During periods of TEMPERATURE INVERSION, the summit can be several degrees warmer than down in the town. In calm, clear conditions, especially in the winter when snow is lying, the cold air from the mountain tops drains down the slopes & collects in the valley. Sometimes this cold pool of air can get trapped there for a few days,with very low temperatures & perhaps some freezing fog into the bargain. At times like this, it is a joy to be on Scotland's mountains, where it will not only be warmer than down below, but will usually have excellent visibility,so that the walker can see all the summits into the far distance.

WEDNESDAY 26th JANUARY

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
Another of those nights when the gritters would be in some doubt whether to be active or not, as air temperatures fell to +2.2, but ground temperatures to -0.7. This morning is currently dry, with a 6/8ths cloud cover.

PILOCHRY TODAY
Much of the day will be dry, but there will be a few light showers around. These showers are likely to be of snow on the higher ground, so perhaps a scattering on Ben Y Vrackie. It will be generally rather cloudy, but a few breaks are also expected. It will feel somewhat colder, maximum temperatures around 4 or 5 degrees.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Mainly dry, just the chance of an odd shower(a little snow on hills). Clear periods will lead to a fairly widespread frost, with minimum around -2 or -3.

OUTLOOK
Several quiet, fine, dry days to end the month,  with variable amounts of cloud & some sunny spells. The days will be rather cold & there will be overnight frost & fog patches.

TUESDAY 25th JANUARY----EVENING

UPDATE @ 1630Hrs
After one or two early morning showers, the rest of the day became dry. It was generally cloudy, but there were odd breaks in the cloud sheet. Temperatures were again a little above the late January average at 7.1 degrees

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
There could be an odd shower around, but much of the period will be dry. Skies will be generally rather cloudy, but there are likely to be a few breaks & this poses a frost risk. Minimum temperatures may fall to slight frost levels of -1 & of course, lower than this at ground level.

OUTLOOK
Remaining mainly dry, but winds will become established from the N.E. This will lead to somewhat colder days than the last few, with a frost & mist patches risk continuing overnight.

TUESDAY 25th JANUARY

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
More cloud & a few showers later in the night resulted in higher minimum temperatures than predicted. The surface of my lawn is very wet, as melt water sits on top of a still frozen sub-surface. A light shower on at present.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
One or two showers are currently affecting our area, moving from the N.W. Later on, it should become mainly dry with some brightness. Temperatures should rise to around 8 degrees, which is above the late January average.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
An odd shower is possible, but much of the time should stay dry, with a few clear spells around. Minimum temperatures won't be too far from freezing & a ground frost seems likely.

OUTLOOK
It's still set for a fairly quiet week ahead, with high pressure building again. However, the position of the high will introduce winds from the N.E. so although mainly dry, with some sunny intervals, there will also be some cloudy periods. A slight frost & some mist patches are likely on most nights & daytime temperatures will return to rather below average levels after today.

MONDAY 24th JANUARY----EVENING

UPDATE @ 1700Hrs
  A very reasonable January day, with temperatures up to 7.7 (a little ABOVE normal ) & a fair amount of dry, bright weather. The promised small amount of rain is still desperately trying to cross the high ground to the NW of us, but is mostly disintegrating & only a few spits & spots are likely to affect us.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
The odd patch of slight rain in the next hour or two, but becoming dry with some cloud clearances later. This is problematic for the gritters, as minimum temperatures may just dip slightly below freezing as a result.

OUTLOOK
It's still set to be a quiet week weatherwise, with no extremes on the radar .High pressure will re-assert itself to give a mainly dry week, with some cloudy spells, but also a few bright periods. Any clear spells overnight are likely to lead to a slight frost & day-time temperatures are likely to drop back somewhat as the week goes on.


CAN YOU REMEMBER THE VERY MILD JANUARY OF 1989?             Looking back through the temperature records for PITLOCHRY to which I have access, the mildest January of all was 1989. .During the 31 days of that month, the average maximum temperature was an exceptionally mild 9.5 degrees! We haven't even reached that figure once so far this month.The average minimum temperature was an impressive +3.5. Just 1 minimum this month has bettered that figure. In terms of the long- term average, January 1989 was, overall, 4.3 degrees above--- a similar POSITIVE anomaly to the NEGATIVE anomaly of the December just past. In other words, January1989 was just as exceptionally mild as December 2010 was exceptionally cold.  Somehow I think that the exceptionally COLD month will stick in the memory longer!          Just out of interest, January 2011 is likely to finish colder than average, but not by a great amount.

MONDAY 24th JANUARY

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
Almost an air frost overnight (+0.3 ), but milder now (+3.9 ). The barometer is lower this morning.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
 Mainly cloudy. Mostly dry for much of the morning, but a spell of mostly light rain & drizzle for a time this afternoon. It should turn out milder than for some time, with maximum temperatures around 7 degrees.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Perhaps some of the afternoon rain spilling over for a time into this evening, but then turning dry, with cloud thinning & breaking. This will lead to a fall in temperatures, which are likely to end up close to freezing.
OUTLOOK
High pressure is likely to dominate the week's weather. Initially, the big high pressure system will pull back over the Atlantic, before re-establishing itself over Britain later in the week. So, overall, a quiet week of weather, with no extremes.Much of the time will be dry, with a mixture of cloudy spells & some intervals of sunshine. It will initially be rather mild, but daytime temperatures are likely to drop back somewhat as the week goes on.A few slight frosts are likely

Beware of black ice this morning (it would appear slight rain has fallen onto frozen ground ). There was a frost earlier in the night (-2.6), but now it's above zero (+1.3 )

Still high pressure dominating, but more cloud around than yesterday. Still a few intervals of sunshine, with maximum temperatures reaching about 5 degrees. Winds mainly light to moderate from the N or NW.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Broken cloud, with a few clear intervals. Minimum temperatures down to about -1, so just a slight frost.

OUTLOOK
The high pressure will be a little further away, but still have an influence on our weather. Apart from a little light rain for a time on Monday, the next few days will be dry, with temperatures around 5 or 6 by day & with a few mist patches & slight frost overnight.

SATURDAY 22nd JANUARY----EVENING

UPDATE @ 1630Hrs
The most surprising feature of today's weather was that there was virtually unbroken sunshine. That certainly wasn't the case in all parts of the region, so Pitlochry was lucky. However, this didn't help to lift temperatures very much .Frost seems to have survived in the shadows & maximum temperatures only reached 3.7. By 1630, the thermometer was down to 0.7.


THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Some cloud around, but also clear spells & as a consequence, patches of mist & fog, together with a moderate frost are expected. The minimum temperature is likely to be around -3 to -5..

OUTLOOK
High pressure retreating westwards into the Atlantic, but still influencing our weather. Mainly dry, perhaps a little light rain on Monday. Generally more cloud around & temperatures near to the seasonal average.

JANUARY CAN GET "WARM", BUT ONLY FOR THE LUCKY FEW!
Apparently, there have been just 10 days in the past 100 years when the temperature somewhere in Britain in January has exceeded 17degrees (62.6 in old money ).  Not only do the meteorological conditions have to be right, but the geographical ones have to be right too.
The meteorological conditions needed are a mild, moist S or SW airflow.The geographical conditions that then promote the unseasonable warmth (& keep it for the lucky few ) are that the area should have high ground (the higher the better) lying to its south or south west & itself to be situated on low- lying land, ( the nearer to sea-level the better)
Many parts of England do not have these geographical criteria, but some parts of Scotland & Wales do.
Most of the Welsh records occur on the North Wales coast around Bangor & Llandudno, with Aber, between the two, holding the record of 18.3. Snowdonia provides the necessary high ground, helping to generate the warmth to its lee.
In Scotland, the January"warm spots"are promoted by the extensive high mountainous areas. Favoured spots include the southern shore of the Moray Firth, parts of N.W.Scotland &the valleys inland from Aberdeen. PITLOCHRY does not appear to be "favoured" with its record high for January only 13.7 degrees. I'll be the 1st to let you know if it goes any higher!!

A fair amount of mist & fog has dispersed in the last hour, though some still remains.A large high pressure system is currently centred right over the British Isles, so a good time to check household barometers, which should be reading approx.1040 mbs (30.7 inches ) Current temperature  -1.2 degrees.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
 It should be a dry, generally bright day, with variable amounts of cloud & some sunny intervals. Maximum temperatures should reach about 4 degrees, with light winds.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Dry with some clear spells, though a few more cloudy periods as well. Some mist & fog patches are likely to develop, with a slight frost (minimum about -2 )

OUTLOOK
The high pressure system will retreat westwards into mid-Atlantic, allowing weak frontal systems to move from the NW.The next few days will still see mostly dry weather, though a little light rain or drizzle may occur. Cloud amounts will generally be greater than of late. Temperatures should be in the range 5 to 7 by day & any frosts should be slight.

Yet another dry day & although rather more cloud around, remaining bright with a little sunshine. Yesterday turned out colder than expected, but today, the forecast was rather pessimistic on temperature, which actually reached 5.0 degrees. Dundee had only reached 3 by 1600Hrs, while 5 observation stations were reporting maxima of only -2 (these mostly around Carlisle & Cumbria ).

Dry, with broken cloud & a few clear intervals. The cloud may be sufficient to hold lowest temperatures at around -1 or -2

OUTLOOK
A dry weekend is expected , with variable amounts of cloud & some sunny intervals. Next week will start with rather more cloud around, but daytime temperatures should be a degree or two higher, with a lower risk of overnight frosts.

 Another pleasant morning & not just as cold as 24Hrs ago.The overnight minimum was -6.3, but the thermometer has risen faster than it did yesterday morning & is currently -3.8.  A few spots in the U.K. have been down to -9.

 We are still under the influence of high pressure & will be for some days to come. It will again be dry throughout, with some sunny intervals, but also areas of cloud, so less sunshine than yesterday. Still feeling cold, with maximum temperatures only about 2 degrees.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
 Continuing dry.There will be a mix of some clear intervals, but also some areas of cloud, caused by weak fronts moving down from the north. Temperatures, as a result, should not fall as low as on recent nights, minimum down to about -2

OUTLOOK
High pressure will hang on, which usually suggests that the dry weather will last as well. However, it seems likely that there will generally be more cloud around, though there should be some rather milder days & less in the way of overnight frosts. So all-in-all, fairly promising.

THURSDAY 20th JANUARY----EVENING

UPDATE @ 1630Hrs
Today saw plenty of clear sky & sunshine. Visibility became excellent across the region, Leuchars reporting 60kms at 1500Hrs. However, it was even colder than expected, with a top temperature of only 0.5 (Carlisle did not better -3, with Glasgow reaching only -1 ). In Pitlochry at 1630, it was -1.1 with a force 4 east wind, giving an icy wind-chill effect.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
 Another very cold night, with temperatures down to around -6. There will be some clear spells overnight, but there is a lot more cloud out to the west & some of this is likely to spill over into our area. There may be mist & fog patches again by morning.

OUTLOOK
It is expected to remain dry until after the weekend. Staying on the cold side, with overnight frost. A mixture of some sunshine & some areas of cloud.

THURSDAY 20th JANUARY

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
A sharp frost this morning (-6.0 ). Lowest in the U.K. was -8 (Shap, Eskdalemuir & Belfast ). It was still -6.0 when observations were taken, so only a slow warming up, but sparkling out there (unless you have some mist or fog). Seems ideal for a stroll by the loch or in the woods.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
 A frosty start, with some freezing fog around in the valley. The day will again be dry & a fair amount of sunshine is expected. It is likely to be a degree or two down on yesterday, with maximum temperatures only about 3 degrees.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Dry, with good clear spells. Perhaps a few cloud patches at times overnight. Frosty once again, but probably not quite as cold as the night just gone. Minimum temperatures around -4.

 Another fine, dry day in prospect, with spells of sunshine. Once again, feeling rather cold, with highest temperatures around 4 degrees (the long-term average maximum temperature at this time of year is about 5.3)


THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Dry, with long clear periods, leading to a sharp frost & probably some valley bottom mist or fog.  Lowest temperatures in the range -5 to -7.

OUTLOOK
High pressure will be firmly in control at least until the end of this week. This means a continuation of the present dry weather.  Frosty out there! It's a beautiful morning, but the lawn is rock hard & there are going to be some icy patches around.

PILOCHRY TODAY
A mainly dry day ahead, with sunny spells (There is a low risk of a light passing sleet/snow shower). After a nippy start with fairly widespread frost, it will still feel on the cold side, with highest temperatures around 4 degrees.

A mostly clear night, especially before the early hours, after which ,there may be some increase in cloud amounts. There will again be a fairly widespread frost, with lowest temperatures around -2 degrees.

UPDATE @ 1715Hrs
 Today was supposedly the worst Monday in the year for people feeling fed-up & depressed about things!  Well in this neck ot the woods at least, there was nothing depressing about the weather & a bright, dry day, with most of the ice & snow away, made it ideal for a walk or a potter in the garden.  The max. temp. was 4.9 & the current temperature 2.0.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
A mainly dry evening & night, with just a low risk of a sleety shower. The clear spells will allow a slight air frost to develop, minimum in the range -2 to 0, with a widespread ground frost.

OUTLOOK
Mainly dry for several days, with some sunshine. Any showers should be very well-scattered, but could have some wet snow in them. The days will begin to feel a little colder & frost is likely each night.

There is still ice around on some minor roads & paths.Overnight, temperatures nudged slightly higher to 7.2, before dropping back earlier this morning to 4.0.

Much of the day should remain dry, with some occasional sunshine. Just a chance of an odd passing shower. Temperatures should reach 7 or 8 degrees.

 It's been up to 7.0 degrees today, with 12.7 mms of rain (0900 to 1600). Pools of water are still being held on the surface by frozen ground.

Something of a respite from the rain for a while this evening, but more expected later for a time.  Later in the night, drier conditions are expected to spread from the north west.Temperatures should hold above 2 or 3 degrees as a minimum.

OUTLOOK
 Mainly dry on Sunday, apart from the odd shower during the afternoon. A good deal of dry weather next week, but becoming rather cold, with overnight frost.

The mildest 9a.m. so far this year, with an overnight min. of +1.4. However, it's cloudy with light rain. There's a bit less snow & ice around, but it is still classed as a day of "snow lying" as more than 50% of the ground at the same altitude remains covered with snow.It should become the mildest day of 2011 to date today!!(big deal).

PILOCHRY TODAY
A mainly cloudy day, with spells of rain. Although there will be times when the rain is moderate & persistent, there may also be spells of lighter rain & even the odd dry interlude.Rainfall amounts will be considerably higher in the far west of the county, but somewhat lower towards the East Coast. It will be breezy from the S.W.with max. temps around 8 degrees.There will be an accelerated thaw of snow & ice, with a rise in river levels.

FRIDAY 14th JANUARY---EVENING

UPDATE @ 1630Hrs.
 Today saw the highest temperature so far this year, an uninspiring 5.8 degrees. Initially misty & murky, the day eventually became rather showery, especially this afternoon, when bands of showers from the west, managed to survive to affect our area.The current temperature was 4.1, with still a few icy patches around.


THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Rather cloudy this evening, with an odd shower still possible .Later in the night, wet & windy weather will spread in from the south west, with temperatures holding a few degrees above freezing.

OUTLOOK
Saturday will be mainly cloudy & windy, with spells of rain. The thaw will go on apace & river levels will rise sharply.It will be mild at around 8 degrees.Sunday will be much drier & brighter. 


GLOBAL WARMING CONTINUES       Despite our severe early winter weather, Nasa Experts confirm that 2010 was the joint warmest year on record(along with 2005) across the globe. Overall, these two years were 0.62c above the 20th Century average, when taking a combination of land & water surface temperatures across the world.

Many scientists believe that the onset of LA NINA, an irregular cycle that is responsible for pushing warmer water close to the coasline of Queensland (& influences conditions further afield, such as off the coast of Brazil) can be blamed for helping to generate the more intense storms that have led to severe flooding in these regions. It is believed that increasingly higher world-wide temperatures, which add more energy to the system, may lead to a greater frequency of occurrence of La Nina.

FRIDAY 14th JANUARY

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
A misty, murky start to the day, following overnight rain.Still some ice around.Temperatures actually rose to 4.5 overnight.

PILOCHRY TODAY
Mainly cloudy & misty for a time, with a light shower just possible. Becoming mainly dry later & somewhat brighter, though still rather cloudy.Temperatures should reach more respectable levels, with a high of around 6 or 7.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Dry with a few clear spells during the evening & first part of the night. Temperatures will fall to their lowest then, perhaps to frost levels. A big change later in the night as wet & windy conditions spread from the west & last into the morning.

OUTLOOK
Saturday is likely to see an acceleration of the thaw, with mild, windy & at times wet weather.   Sunday should be drier & brighter..

THURSDAY 13th January---EVENING

UPDATE @ 1700Hrs
There was rain for a time this morning, some of it pooling on top of ice. There was a shower this afternoon & later, some fog descended for a time. Temperatures remained below normal ( max 3.2), despite much higher temperatures in parts of Scotland.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Mainly rather cloudy. Largely dry until the wee small hours when a spell of rain will set in, probably clearing around dawn. Temperatures should remain above freezing.

OUTLOOK
Rather unsettled with spells of rain, with dry interludes between, perhaps with a few showers. Rather windy at times, though temperatures generally higher than recently.

I was interested in finding out what the various providers of weather forecasts were predicting for today's maximum temperature in Pitlochry i.e. Jan. 13th.

THURSDAY 13th JANUARY

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
After quite a wet night, the ice around my house is still intact & the temperature is only1. There was even a frost in the late evening(-1.2).  Things just don't seem to be getting much milder, despite what we're being told on the BBC weather forecasts!!

PILOCHRY TODAY
The overnight rain will continue at times until late morning.The remainder of the day is likely to remain rather cloudy, with temperatures still struggling somewhat, with highest values around 3 or 4 degrees.(I just can't see these 6 to 8 predictions being realized)

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Mostly cloudy. Dry at first, but some further rain overnight. temperatures should remain a degree or two above freezing.

OUTLOOK
Generally unsettled, with further rain at times & also some windy periods. Temperatures higher than of late.

WEDNESDAY 12th JANUARY---EVENING

UPDATE @ 1630Hrs
A very disappointing day temperature-wise, as Pitlochry turned out to be one of the coldest places in the U.K.at only 1.5 degrees (It was actually no warmer than the summit of Cairngorm) Dundee was nearly as bad. Dozens of places in England made double figures, with some as high as 13. The cold air is proving hard to shift & already the temperature has fallen to zero.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Some clear spells to start with & a slight frost developing. Later on, cloud will increase & thicken followed by a spell of rain(there could even be some sleet, especially on higher ground). By morning, the temperature should have risen a little.

OUTLOOK
Unsettled, with rain or showers at times.Occasionally windy. Becoming milder with an acceleration in the thawing process

C.N.N. reports that 49 out of the 50 states in the U.S. have some snow cover. The 1 exception is Florida. Even Hawaii, which has very high volcanic peaks, has a snow cover on these mountains.

WEDNESDAY 12th JANUARY

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
 The trees & bushes are again all dressed in white, looking beautiful, but up above, gone are the blue skies of the last couple of days, replaced by low cloud, dampness & murk. I've spent the last hour pushing 4cms of snow off an underlying sheet of ice.   But don't despair! This is likely to be the last snowfall for a while & the Atlantic is full of depressions & fronts already starting to bring milder, wetter & windier weather to most parts of Britain (Last of all to Northern Scotland). Overnight the lowest temperature was -2.3, while currently it is 0.2

PILOCHRY TODAY
A mainly cloudy day,with the cloud at its lowest this morning when there may be a little drizzle around. Possibly a little brighter later. With a fresh fall of snow lying, this will hold back the temperature, probably at around 2 or 3 degrees with only a very slow thaw.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Probably just about escaping a frost. A likelihood of some rain for a time during the night.

OUTLOOK
Often unsettled, with rain at times & windy on occasions, but milder than we have been used to.There should be a rapid thaw, with rising river levels.
